In a shocking incident, a 31-year-old mother and her two-year-old son have been found dead at their home at Mageza, with preliminary police investigations suggesting suspected murder-suicide.
The mother and toddler were discovered lying dead on a bed at around 7pm on Thursday, in a case that has left the family struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.
A family member, who requested anonymity, said they were lost for words and did not know what to say following the deaths.
“We are lost for words. We do not even know what to say at this moment,” he said.
He said the family would wait for the police investigation to establish what happened, adding that they had already shared with the police what they knew about the incident.
According to information released by the police on its social media page, Hluthi Police have launched an investigation into the suspected murder-suicide.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the woman had allegedly had an argument with the child’s father days before the incident.
It is alleged that she subsequently acquired a poisonous substance, which was mixed with yoghurt.
Police investigations suggest that the child was given the contaminated food before the woman allegedly ingested it herself.
The yoghurt and suspected poisonous substance were reportedly found inside the house.
The circumstances surrounding the deaths remain under investigation.
The tragedy comes days after another incident involving a mother and her infant in Lobamba, where a 27-year-old woman was reportedly admitted to a psychiatric facility for assessment after allegedly stabbing her four-month-old daughter.
The baby survived and received medical treatment at Mbabane Government Hospital
