There’s a timeless bit of wisdom from the book of Ecclesiastes that says: “There is nothing new under the sun.”

At first glance, this ancient piece of wisdom may sound simple. But if you sit with it, it reveals a profound truth—especially for the youth of Africa today.

What it is really saying is this: the road to success has already been walked. So has the path to failure. The signs, the shortcuts, the danger zones—they have all been mapped out.

The real tragedy? Too many of us are choosing to ignore the map, trying to figure everything out from scratch. This is where many of our youth’s failures and regrets originate. Even adults, sadly, never learn. From the days of their youth to their twilight years, many remain trapped in the same deceptive cycle of being ‘all-knowing’.

AFRICA IS FULL OF POTENTIAL

Africa is overflowing with energy, talent, creativity and big dreams. From the tech hubs in Nairobi to the bustling streets of Lagos, from the quiet kingdom of Eswatini to the lecture halls of Johannesburg and Cairo—you will find young people hungry to build, innovate and make a difference.

But here is the hard truth: dreams without guidance are too heavy and too costly to achieve. Hard work without direction often leads to frustration. And ambition without wisdom? That can quickly become disappointment.

It is natural to want to find your own way and take risks—to live life on your own terms. But boldness that is not anchored in humility—a teachable spirit—is not bravery. It is recklessness.

Across the continent, young people are starting businesses without mentorship, entering relationships without advice, pursuing careers based on hype rather than research. And when things fall apart, it is not because they lacked potential—but because they lacked guidance.

WISDOM IS NOT YOUR ENEMY

This is not about killing your spirit of innovation or adventure. Africa absolutely needs dreamers, builders, and risk-takers.

But there is no glory in repeating mistakes others have already made. Ecclesiastes reminds us: “There is nothing new under the sun.” Whatever you are facing—someone has faced it before. Someone has already succeeded, or failed, where you want to go.

Africa has a deep tradition of passing down wisdom through stories, proverbs, and conversations. Yet today, in our fast-paced, social media-driven world, we are often too distracted to listen. We scroll. We post. We chase. But we rarely pause to ask real questions.

Success still follows discipline, humility, patience, and consistency. Failure still follows pride, impulse, and refusal to listen.

THE RELAY RACE OF LIFE

Take business, for example. Many youth are becoming entrepreneurs and that is incredible. But too many ventures collapse—not because the ideas were bad, but because the foundation was not solid.

Life is like a relay race. No matter how fast you are, you cannot run the whole race alone. The baton—representing wisdom and experience—must be passed on. Yet too many youth are sprinting past mentors, thinking speed is all that matters.

Teachability is not weakness. It is wisdom. It means knowing that you do not know everything. It means asking before you leap.

TEACHABILITY IS AN ATTITUDE

Being teachable is not about age, classroom, or qualifications. It is an attitude. It is a constant posture of asking: “Who has been here before? What can I learn? What can I avoid?”

Even the simplest things, like brushing your teeth, were taught. Without teachability, even life’s basics would be missed. The same applies to finances, relationships, careers, and leadership.

Africa’s future lies in its youth. Potential without preparation is just a dream. And preparation begins with humility.

FINAL THOUGHT: WISDOM CAN TEACH YOU

Pain is not the only teacher. Wisdom can teach you too. You do not have to suffer to grow. You can grow by listening, succeed by learning, and move forward by asking.

The signs are always there—be on the lookout. The voices are there too—take a moment to listen. Someone already failed so you don’t have to. Someone already figured out the formula. Someone already ran the race. All you have to do is take the baton.

Stop wasting precious time and energy repeating avoidable mistakes. Be wise. Be teachable.
