ASPIRING politicians have started marketing themselves on social media and are already “campaigning” for the 2028 elections.
This move gained momentum last week when some aspiring candidates used their social media pages to remind people in their constituencies that they intended to contest in 2028, despite losing the 2023 election.
The candidates reposted the posters published by the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) after the vetting process confirmed their eligibility during the previous elections.
One social media user said she was unlucky during the 2023 primary elections, which hindered her chances of becoming a legislator. She said joining and winning the primary elections was tricky, which was why she was already making people aware of her intention to contest.

In her post, she said the first thing she wanted to do if elected to Parliament was to propose a cut in legislators’ salaries. She said it was unfortunate that she did not win, and legislators ended up having their salaries increased while many families could have benefited from the additional payments.
Meanwhile, another user said as a young person nominated to be an MP, he had discovered that early campaigning and convincing people in his constituency was the way to go. He reminded the people of Mafutseni that, just as they had trusted him in 2023, they could do the same in 2028. He said he was now matured, noting he was the youngest candidate nominated during the last election.
Some legislators revealed that there were people hosting soccer matches in their constituencies, which they said was improper while an inkhundla council was still in office. One legislator said it did not look proper for aspiring candidates to gather people and market themselves while there was still a council in office.
“Some of these people were hosting these events with the help of tindvuna tetinkhundla, which shows that people have started campaigning and they have already formed teams,” he said.
