HIS Majesty’s Correctional Services (HMCS) have launched a manhunt for an inmate, who escaped from the Matsapha Correctional Centre yesterday afternoon, prompting an appeal to members of the public for assistance in locating him.
According to HMCS Public Relations Officer Assistant Chief Officer Baphelele Kunene, the inmate escaped at around 2pm while he was carrying out assigned duties within the precincts of the correctional facility.
He identified the inmate as Banele Messia Matsebula, who is serving a five-year prison sentence after being convicted on a Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence (SODV) charge.
Kunene noted that Matsebula escaped despite being under supervision while undertaking work within the prison grounds.
He noted that the fugitive was born at Ngculwini (Joy Mission) and was due for release on July 1, 2029, meaning he still has almost three years remaining on his sentence.
The circumstances surrounding how the inmate managed to flee from the correctional facility have not yet been disclosed.
“We have intensified efforts to trace and recapture the fugitive,” he said.
His Majesty’s Correctional Services urged the public not to approach the escaped inmate if spotted, but instead to immediately alert law enforcement authorities.
“Members of the public with information that could lead to Matsebula’s arrest are encouraged to contact the Officer-in-Charge at Matsapha Correctional Centre on 7668 4473 or 7909 2536, the HMCS Public Relations Office on 7909 2501, the Royal Eswatini Police Service emergency numbers 999/9999, or report to the nearest correctional facility.”
Kunene further appealed to the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement by reporting any sightings or information that may assist in the inmate’s recapture.
He said community cooperation would be vital in ensuring that the fugitive is returned to lawful custody as investigations into the incident continue.
