YOUNG Emaswati who emerged top in different STEM categories during the 2026 National Schools STEM Expo have been rewarded with tablets by the ministry of information, communication and technology (ICT).
Among those recognised was Richard Makwakwa of KaBoyce High School, who secured first position in system development. Two learners from Inkhanyeti High School also took first position in website development, while a young learner at primary school level emerged first in problem solving.
The learners were recognised during a press conference held by the ministry of ICT on Friday to celebrate youth achievements in ICT, space science and STEM.
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, encompassing disciplines that drive innovation and address global challenges. It fosters critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity, equipping individuals to tackle complex issues and contribute to sustainable development.
Makwakwa, who delivered a speech of appreciation on behalf of the learners, thanked the ministry for inviting them to the event and recognising their work in technology and innovation.
He said the opportunity to interact with leaders, professionals and other young people in ICT had inspired learners to work harder and develop their skills. Makwakwa said technology could be used to create solutions that made a positive difference in communities and the country.
He said the ministry’s support motivated young people to believe that their ideas could contribute to the country’s development.
Minister of ICT Savannah Maziya congratulated the learners and said the tablets were intended to support them as they continued developing their skills.
She also urged the learners to share the knowledge they had gained with other young people. She said the purpose of recognising the learners was not only to celebrate their achievements but also to encourage them to continue pursuing science, technology and innovation.
President of the STEM Teacher Associations Nkosikhona Nhlabatsi said the 2026 Schools STEM Expo had involved learners from across the country.
He said 178 schools participated across the four regions, with 1 899 learners taking part in the regional STEM expos. A total of 1 200 learners participated at the National Schools STEM Expo.
Nhlabatsi said the learners received awards including tablets, certificates, trophies, medals and gift packs containing items such as earphones, stationery, mathematical instruments, string bags and water bottles. He said teachers whose learners excelled were also recognised with T-shirts and mugs as tokens of appreciation for their contribution.
The regional STEM expos were held in Manzini, Hhohho, Shiselweni and Lubombo region before the national finale at the University of Eswatini.
Nhlabatsi thanked the ministry of ICT for mobilising resources for the STEM Expo, saying the support had enabled top-performing learners to be recognised for their dedication and talent.
He said the awards were intended not only to recognise hard work but also to encourage young people to use technology, remain curious and consider careers in STEM.
The ministry’s recognition of the learners formed part of a wider programme celebrating youth achievement in ICT, science, technology and innovation.
Maziya told the young people that their achievements came with a responsibility to share their knowledge and help empower others, as the ministry seeks to encourage more young Emaswati to participate in STEM and technology.
