As the country ushered in the cold weather yesterday, as predicted by experts, temperatures are expected to drop to single digits in western parts today and tomorrow.

Eswatini Meteorological Services forecaster Nancy Dlamini warned the nation to prepare for very cold conditions.

She said maximum temperatures would range between 4°C and 7°C today, rising slightly to between 5°C and 8°C tomorrow.

She said the coldest conditions would be experienced in western areas, including Mbabane, Piggs Peak and Nhlangano.

Strong winds are expected mainly over the eastern parts, including Siteki and Big Bend, where maximum temperatures are expected to reach 13°C.

This week’s temperatures are by far the coldest this winter. Temperatures are expected to improve slightly on Thursday, with conditions becoming mild.

Temperatures in the western parts would range between 4°C and 12°C, while the eastern parts would record temperatures ranging between 10°C and 18°C.

“There will be occasional rain showers and freezing rain mainly over the western parts, otherwise cloudy and cold, but very cold in the Highveld. Today and tomorrow will be very cold in the western parts and cold in the eastern parts. The temperatures will improve a bit and be mild on Thursday,” said Dlamini.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Health Promotion Programme Manager Sidumo Lukhele advised members of the public to keep warm throughout the cold spell.

Lukhele urged those who had no reason to go outside to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary exposure to the cold.

He said prolonged exposure to very low temperatures could have long-term effects on people’s health.

Lukhele also advised the nation to use natural fires to keep warm, while exercising caution when using heaters and air conditioners in office spaces.

He encouraged Emaswati to drink warm fluids, saying the body’s metabolism increased when temperatures were low.

“Children should also be kept indoors. They should not be allowed to play outside. In the event a person develops flu symptoms, they should visit the nearest health facility as soon as possible,” Lukhele added.
