SOCCER – Relegation has never loomed larger over the Mavuso Sports Centre than it did on Sunday afternoon, as Manzini Wanderers suffered a devastating 1-3 defeat at the hands of Ubombo Sugar.

The result leaves the fallen hub giants marooned at the foot of the MTN Premier League table with a meagre eight points from 21 matches, a tally that now needs a mathematical miracle if they are to maintain their top-flight status. The Weslians now find themselves trailing the 15th spot by 11 points and safety by a staggering 14.

With only nine fixtures remaining and 27 points left to play for, the road to survival is narrow and increasingly steep. To reach the projected safety mark of 23 to 26 points, Nyanga ‘Crooks’ Hlophe’s charges will likely need to secure at least five wins from their final nine outings — a daunting task for a side that has managed only a solitary victory all season. The gravity of the situation is compounded by the fact that they must now average nearly two points per game, having averaged just 0.38 points per match thus far.

Coming to the match, the encounter began with a high degree of tension as Ubombo Sugar enjoyed early spells of possession without finding a clinical edge. Controversy erupted in the fifth minute when referee Sanele Ntimane initially awarded a penalty to the visitors after Majahasibili ‘Giggs’ Ndlovu was judged to have slid illegally in the area.

However, after intense protests from the Wanderers players and a lengthy consultation with his assistant, Ntimane reversed the decision to the relief of the home crowd. Despite the reprieve, Van-Rooyen Magagula’s men continued to press, with Sabelo Dlamini providing a dangerous cross in the 28th minute that Ndlovu narrowly failed to convert from six yards out.

Against the run of play, the maroon and white outfit drew blood on the stroke of half-time. Veteran striker Wonder ‘Samba Jive’ Nhleko demonstrated his enduring class, controlling the ball inside the area and shielding his markers before firing a low drive past Ghanaian international goalkeeper Innocent Adja. It was Nhleko’s second goal of the campaign and gave the hub giants a slender 1-0 lead going into the interval.

The second half, however, saw a total capitulation from the hosts.

The sugar boys emerged with renewed intent, forcing Mozambican shot-stopper Mario Jamine into several desperate saves.

The resistance finally crumbled in the 63rd minute when substitute Innocent Dlamini pounced on a loose ball to equalise. Before the home side could catch their breath, Sizwe Maziya doubled the advantage just 60 seconds later following a frantic goal-mouth scramble.

Wanderers had a golden opportunity to level matters when Muhle Siyaya delivered a pinpoint cross for Nhleko, but the veteran’s footing betrayed him on the slippery surface.

The final nail in the coffin arrived in the 90th minute amidst scenes of fury from the Wanderers bench.

Neliso Myeni appeared to be in a clearly offside position when he turned the ball home to make it 3-1, but despite the vehement protests of ‘Crooks’ Hlophe and his staff, the goal stood. It marked the club’s 15th loss of a catastrophic season.

The path ahead offers no respite for the Weslians. Their survival bid continues with a difficult away trip to Tabankulu Celtics in Round 22, followed by a daunting visit to Nsingizini Hotspurs in Round 23.

Manzini Wanderers’ relegation fears are growing after a 3-1 loss to Ubombo Sugar, leaving them bottom of the table.

They then return home for two critical clashes against Manzini Sea Birds and Mbabane Swallows in Rounds 24 and 25.

The definitive moment of their season will likely arrive in Round 26, an away fixture against Sisonkhe FC that effectively serves as a ‘six-pointer’ for survival.

The final stretch sees them host Royal Leopard in Round 27, travel to Ezulwini United in Round 28 and conclude the campaign at home against Green Mamba and Amawele FC in Rounds 29 and 30, respectively.

Unless they can find a level of consistency that has eluded them for months, the curtains may be closing on the top-flight history of one of the country’s most decorated institutions.

Additional Context

Manzini Wanderers’ current form reflects one of the toughest seasons in the club’s history, with relegation now a serious threat. Their remaining fixtures will be decisive in determining whether they can stage a late escape or face demotion.
