National Commissioner of Police Manoma Vusi Masango says people who are not ready to offer love and support to their children must not have them.

He said children were a gift from God and that their arrival on earth is never a mistake. Masango said this in reference to the incident in which a father killed his two children aged eight and 11 before committing suicide.

Speaking during a press conference, the national commissioner said what was gathered by the police was that the father had been abusive to a point where the mother of his two children disappeared without a trace.

He said the incident was devastating, especially because it involved minors.

“If a person is not ready to love children as expected of any parent, they should abstain and not have them rather than to subject them to abuse,” said Masango.

He also advised the nation to desist from taking drastic decisions under pressure, saying in the event one feels they have no other way out of a situation, they should reach out to pastors, the police and any other available structures that could assist them.

“The resolve to commit suicide is a sign that a person might have felt they had no other alternative but to take their own life. The nation must seek help,” he advised.

Masango also noted that during the official opening of Parliament early this year, His Majesty King Mswati III spoke strongly against gender-based violence (GBV).

“As the Royal Eswatini Police Service, we will not rest until the scourge of GBV has been addressed,” he said.

Masango added that before the end of this month, the REPS will have a programme where GBV issues would be discussed in a bid to help inform the police strategy towards fighting the scourge.

DPM’s office acts swiftly

THE deputy prime minister’s office has reacted promptly to the reports of a man who is alleged to have killed his two children by hanging them and further hanged himself.

Director of Social Welfare Mcusi Shongwe said the office sent officials to the homestead yesterday to assess the situation.

Shongwe stated that the DPM’s office was shocked to learn of the tragedy which claimed the lives of two innocent children.

At the time of the interview yesterday afternoon, Shongwe said the office was awaiting a conclusive report from the officials on the ground to determine the appropriate action.

“The office is yet to determine its immediate response on the matter as we understand that the family is currently faced with a difficult situation,” he said.

The family pleaded for assistance to bury the deceased. Siphiwe Maziya stated that the family had absolutely nothing in terms of resources to bury the man and his two children.
