THE uptake of the HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is increasing as 1 500 doses were taken in six months.

These doses were procured by government in December last year for the national rollout of the prophylaxis.

National Emergency Response Council on HIV/AIDS’ (NERCHA) Dr Bongani Masango shared this with parliamentarians during the Senate Climate Change Sessional Committee inaugural meeting yesterday.

The meeting was held at the Happy Valley Hotel under the theme ‘Aligning Climate Action with Sexual Reproductive Health Rights, HIV/Aids Governance Commitments’.

Dr Masango reported this as an achievement, adding that the process of procuring more PrEP was ongoing.

“The uptake is high and this is a positive development. We have provided more doses and more people are still coming,” he said.

Responding to a question posed by Senator Chief Mphatfwa on whether there were plans to fortify the current PrEP so that it could be used as an HIV cure, Dr Masango hinted on a possibility, saying, “There are many studies that are being undertaken to provide a cure, among which is fortifying PrEP.

On the 26th there is a team going to Brazil where a report related to this will be presented.
