Great Wall Motors (GWM) South Africa has confirmed the reveal date of a plug-in hybrid version of the standard Haval H6.

Available since last year in the GT model, the partially electrified powertrain will now make its debut on the normal H6 as an alternative to the self-charging hybrid HEV.

The model is set to premiere on March 18.

Powertrain and Performance

The plug-in hybrid combines the 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine from the HEV with a 19.1-kWh battery pack.

Powering a single electric motor, the setup produces a combined 240kW and 540Nm, according to figures released in markets such as Australia where the model has already gone on sale.

By comparison, the HEV produces 179kW and 530Nm, while the sportier Haval H6 GT generates 321kW and 725Nm.

Great Wall Motors has confirmed the reveal of the plug-in hybrid Haval H6 on March 18, combining a turbo petrol engine with a 19.1-kWh battery and up to 106km electric range.

AWD Option

The H6 GT also features a larger 35.4-kWh battery pack and a second electric motor, enabling an all-wheel drive configuration.

In Australia, buyers also have access to a dual-motor all-wheel drive model producing a combined 268kW and 760Nm, offering significantly stronger performance.

Driving Range

Like the HEV, the plug-in hybrid utilises a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) to distribute power to either the front wheels or all four wheels, depending on the configuration.

The vehicle is claimed to offer up to 106 kilometres of all-electric range, with a total combined driving range of 1 106 kilometres.

Despite being a plug-in hybrid, the H6 supports DC fast charging up to 34kW, allowing quicker battery replenishment.

Pricing Expectations

In Australia, pricing for the plug-in hybrid version ranges from $40 990 to $43 990, which converts to approximately R473 971 to R508 660 before taxes.

In South Africa, the current starting price for the entry-level H6 HEV Luxury is around R641 500, suggesting the plug-in hybrid variant could start at approximately R680 000.

However, pricing will only be confirmed once Great Wall Motors officially unveils the vehicle next week.
