A 48-year-old man was shocked to discover what appeared to be a human skull next to an irrigation canal on Thursday.
The man, who works for a local sugarcane plantation, had gone to carry out his duties at the Simunye irrigation canal when he stumbled upon the bones just after 7am.
According to a witness, the bones had no tissue attached, raising suspicions that they may have been there for some time or possibly disturbed by dogs in the area.
It is further suspected that missing bone fragments could have been displaced by animals before the discovery.
The incident was immediately reported to Simunye police, who launched an investigation. Police sources confirmed that the bones were taken for forensic examination.
