SOCCER – ESWATINI football stands on the verge of a transformative era as the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) and Skyfly.mobi are coming with a groundbreaking supporters’ smartcard system that is expected to revolutionise how clubs engage fans, generate revenue and position themselves commercially.

The landmark initiative introduces official smartcards for all 32 PLE and National First Division (NFD) clubs, making Eswatini one of the few countries in the region with a centralised digital supporters’ registry.

For the first time, clubs will have access to verified membership numbers, structured revenue from registrations and the data sponsors increasingly require when investing in sport.

Supporters will register through a digital platform on the PLE website and receive personalised cards featuring their club’s name, colours and emblem – a modern badge of identity and affiliation.

However, the significance of the system stretches far beyond a new membership card. It represents a decisive shift toward a modern football ecosystem driven by data, technology and commercial value.

The cards come with tangible benefits, including access to discounts and promotions at partner retail, food and energy outlets. Confirmed partners so far include Buy ‘n Save Spar, MTN Fintech’s MoMo platform and Nedbank Eswatini. The cards will be purchasable online once the registration portal goes live after the launch next week.

This initiative has been described as a turning point for local football.

“This project is about transforming the way our football is run. The world is moving towards technology, and we cannot be left behind. The smartcard system allows us to know the true size of each club’s support base, and that information is crucial for growth. It will also help us attract sponsors because sponsors want verified numbers,” said one of the brains behind the whole project.

Club PROs and marketing officers will be expected drive registration aggressively.

It was also noted that as more partners come on board offering discounts to cardholders, clubs will be able to generate consistent revenue that reduces their heavy dependence on sponsorship and gate-takings.

The PLE’s Executive Member Sibusiso ‘Scorpion’ Nxumalo did say that clubs had long struggled because they lacked predictable income streams.

“Running a top-flight club costs so much and this initiative provides a sustainable solution. Fans can register and pay via MoMo. It’s a clean, transparent and efficient system,” said Nxumalo.

Skyfly representative Musa Dlamini said the company was proud to support a digital revolution in Eswatini football.

He said this platform would offer clubs and the PLE reliable data, automation and accountability.

“Our goal is to make the PLE fully commercial and self-sustaining within a year. For too long, clubs have struggled without knowing how many supporters they truly have. This centralised database quantifies fan support, one of the most important metrics for attracting sponsorship,” Dlamini said.

He added that the smartcard system positions Eswatini to compete within a modern, digital football landscape where technology drives supporter experience, revenue generation and long-term planning.

As the PLE and Skyfly prepare to roll out the smartcard system nationwide, the league believes it has finally found a long-awaited mechanism to modernise operations, build commercial value and give supporters a direct role in strengthening their clubs.
