SOCCER – Mbabane Swallows utility player Ayanda Tfwala has said his side desperately needed the victory they secured on Sunday, following their narrow 1-0 win over Ezulwini United at Mavuso Sports Centre.
He stressed that no team required the points more than they did at this stage of the season.
Tfwala, who was deployed in an unfamiliar central midfield role, explained that he had to adjust quickly in order to stabilise the team, especially in the absence of regular midfielders who were not included in the match-day squad.
Despite the challenge, he delivered an impressive performance and was later named Man of the Match.
The left-footed player received a E2 500 award sponsored by MTN Eswatini, the main sponsors of the MTN Premier League. His contribution in the middle of the park proved crucial, as he helped his side maintain balance and control throughout the match.
Thwala admitted that adapting to the role was not easy, but he understood the responsibility placed on him. He said the team’s situation demanded that he rise to the occasion.

“We needed this win more than anyone. I was playing in a position I am not used to, but I had to adapt quickly because the team needed me,’’ he said.
The player also revealed that he suffered a muscle injury during the match and had to receive medical attention. At one point, he was stretched off the field but later returned to continue with the game, showing determination and commitment.
“There was a moment when I felt the muscle tighten, and I had to go off. But my teammates encouraged me to push on. I had to soldier through because I knew there was no one else who could step into that role the way I did,’’ he stated.
Thwala further highlighted that the victory was important for their position on the log table, adding that the team was focused on climbing higher in the standings.
He said they were also motivated by the desire to reward their supporters, who have stood by them throughout the campaign.
“We wanted this win to improve our position on the log. Most importantly, we always want to make our fans happy because they are always behind us,’’ he said.
The performance not only earned Tfwala individual recognition but also underlined his versatility and importance to the team.
