SOCCER – THE local football fraternity has been plunged into mourning following the passing of former Mbabane Highlanders and Manzini Wanderers midfielder Mlamuli ‘Mlaba’ Nkambule, a player remembered by his peers as a talent of rare quality.

The news of his death has sparked a wave of tributes from across the top flight, with former clubs and rivals alike coming together to honour the memory of a man who left an indelible mark on the domestic game.

Mbabane Highlanders, where Nkambule enjoyed some of his most celebrated moments, led the condolences. Club PRO Sifiso ‘Zwide’ Nxumalo expressed the deep sadness felt within the black and white outfit, noting that the midfielder would be remembered for his exceptional technical ability and tactical intelligence.

Nxumalo highlighted that the playmaker was central to one of the club’s most cherished recent successes: the 2019 Eswatini Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (EPTC) Charity Cup triumph at Somhlolo National Stadium.

Under the stewardship of former managing director Chief Ally Kgomongwe, Nkambule proved to be the architect of that victory. His performances during the tournament were so dominant that he was ultimately awarded the Player of the Series accolade.

Speaking on the impact of the late midfielder, Nxumalo said, “He was a player of rare quality, blessed with a cultured left foot and a deep understanding of the game. Mlaba was a key figure in the squad that delivered our most recent silverware, the 2019 EPTC Charity Cup.”

The club further noted that Nkambule’s contribution to the badge remains firmly etched in their modern history. Beyond his technical prowess, his legacy is defined by a level of versatility and respect that saw him feature for the nation’s most prestigious teams.

He belonged to a highly exclusive group of footballers who had the distinction of representing all three of the country’s traditional giants, a feat that speaks volumes of the esteem in which he was held.

It was perhaps fitting that in his final outings on the pitch, Nkambule reminded supporters of his enduring class by finding the net for Manzini Wanderers.

This final contribution served as a poignant closing chapter to a career defined by leadership and skill. In a gesture of solidarity, Highlanders extended their sympathies to the player’s inner circle.
