HIS Majesty King Mswati III directed the Prerogative of Mercy Committee to review the sentences of convicted offenders as part of the country’s 40/58 celebrations.

The directive was announced during the Correctional Services Day celebrations held at the Matsapha Staff College, where the King addressed correctional officers, inmates and invited guests.

The King said the nation was commemorating two significant milestones; 40 years since his coronation and 58 years of his life. He said the celebrations provided an opportunity for the country to reflect on its achievements while renewing its commitment to national development and unity.

“The nation is celebrating 40 years since my coronation this year, which marks a cherished blessing for myself and the kingdom. During such significant reigning milestones, it is with great pleasure that we share our success and progress with convicted offenders who could not be part of the public festivities,” said the King.

His Majesty also explained that the review of inmates’ sentences formed part of the commemorative activities and reflected the country’s commitment to justice tempered with compassion.

He said the exercise would also recognise offenders who had demonstrated rehabilitation, discipline and good behaviour during their incarceration.

The King paid tribute to correctional officers for their dedication, professionalism and commitment to serving the nation, describing their work as essential in maintaining public safety while helping offenders rebuild their lives.

He commended the department for prioritising rehabilitation programmes that continued to equip offenders with practical skills and values necessary for successful reintegration into society upon their release.

He then acknowledged that correctional officers often carried out their responsibilities under difficult circumstances and thanked them for their resilience and unwavering commitment to duty.

His Majesty also welcomed Correctional Services officials from Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states, saying their presence demonstrated the importance of regional cooperation in strengthening correctional systems and promoting the exchange of knowledge and best practices.

Commending the officers for their impressive parade and drill displays, the King praised their discipline, teamwork and professionalism.

“We have just witnessed an exceptional display by the officers. We applaud the guard of honour and their instructors for a demonstration of grit, co-ordination and skill during today’s drills,” he said.

The King further encouraged correctional officers to continue upholding the highest standards of discipline and integrity.

His Majesty urged correctional officers to maintain exemplary conduct on and off duty because they are recognised nationally for their discipline and professionalism.

The King commended correctional officers and encouraged them to remain spiritually grounded.

He also urged officers to be both physically and spiritually fit as they carry out their responsibilities and work with offenders so that they too can live in harmony.

He expressed confidence that they are spiritually and mentally prepared to perform their duties with pride.

The King further applauded the department for embracing modern correctional practices, including rehabilitation programmes, digitalisation and innovative management systems aimed at improving service delivery and offender rehabilitation.

He acknowledged governments across the region for their continued collaboration in advancing Correctional Services and promoting rehabilitation initiatives that contributed to safer communities.

The King concluded by reminding the nation that the 40/58 celebrations were not only a time to celebrate past achievements but also an opportunity to recommit to justice, national development and building a peaceful and prosperous Eswatini for future generations.
