The United States Embassy in Eswatini, in partnership with the Eswatini Theatre Club, has announced an opportunity for creatives to showcase their talents and entrepreneurial skills through the America 250 celebration.

The initiative invites proposals for events and performances inspired by American arts and culture, with selected applicants receiving both financial and technical support.

America 250 marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence and the founding of the US Embassy in Eswatini. Through this initiative, the embassy and the theatre club aim to highlight American artistic excellence while engaging the country’s vibrant creative community.

Selected applicants will receive E6 594 in support funding, free rehearsal and performance space at the Eswatini Theatre Club, as well as basic sound and lighting technical assistance.

In return, beneficiaries will be required to stage a performance or host an event at the Theatre Club and facilitate a related activity at one of the American Corner locations in Mbabane, Manzini or Nhlangano.

The initiative encourages creative interpretations of American culture through various performance styles.

These include poetry inspired by American poets, readings of US plays, musical revues featuring Broadway or American opera songs, dance performances celebrating American choreographers, themed karaoke nights and children’s theatre based on American folk tales.

US Embassy Public Affairs Officer Carly Van Orman said the initiative was designed to strengthen arts entrepreneurship.

“We hope this initiative will expand the pool of individuals who think of themselves as arts managers, who bridge the gap between talent and business,” she said.

“Eswatini has no shortage of artists, but many do not yet see themselves as entrepreneurs or possess project management, marketing or accounting skills needed to create opportunities for themselves and others.”

Van Orman said only four projects would be selected to ensure focused support and effective organising and marketing.

She added that the level of backing was intended to increase the likelihood of successful and impactful events that contribute to the creative economy.

She said an information session for interested applicants was scheduled for 4pm on January 12 at the Eswatini Theatre Club.

The session will be held in a hybrid format and recorded, with the livestream and recording available on the US Embassy Facebook page.

“The creative economy is growing,” Van Orman said.

“Supporting art, entrepreneurs and institutions like Eswatini Theatre Club is key.”

She cited recent initiatives such as Performance Week Mbabane as evidence of growing public interest in cultural events.

Artists and cultural promoters can submit proposals via the online application form before the January 31 deadline.

Applicants are encouraged to present innovative ideas that incorporate strong American elements and demonstrate potential for long-term impact.
