SOCCER – The Government of Cape Verde has declared today a public holiday, ahead of the country’s decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Sihlangu Semnikati.

With just one match remaining in Group D, Cape Verde stands on the brink of history.
The Blue Sharks lead the group with 20 points, followed by Cameroon (18), Libya (15), Angola (11), Mauritius (5), and Eswatini (3).
A win today would seal Cape Verde’s maiden qualification for the global showpiece.

According to Africa Press, Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva announced on Thursday that today would be a national day off to allow citizens to rally behind their beloved team.

The highly anticipated clash will take place on Santiago Island.

In the official statement, the government praised the national side’s remarkable campaign and urged unity in support of the team.

“On October 13 (today), for the match against Eswatini, the government grants a day off in Santiago starting at 12pm, so that our team receives the greatest possible support,” said the Prime Minister. “We are a step away from a historic feat, and the fans who have supported us throughout deserve to witness this moment with passion and pride.”

The statement further encouraged Cape Verdeans at home and abroad to show solidarity and celebrate their nation’s footballing success.

“Everyone, without exception, including those in the diaspora, is called upon to sing together with one voice, the song of freedom and encouragement for our team in every moment of the match.”

The public holiday applies to government and local authority employees.
However, essential services such as the armed forces, police, health facilities, and Correctional Services will continue operating as normal.

Meanwhile, Eswatini will be playing purely for pride after being eliminated from qualification contention.

Head coach Sifiso ‘Nuro’ Ntibane has, however, urged his players to build on their recent performance, following a spirited 2–2 draw against Angola at Somhlolo National Stadium last Wednesday.

“The players are looking forward to the match. Yes, we know it will not be easy, but we will give it our best shot,” Ntibane said.“We want to get all three points in this match.”

The team is already in Cape Verde and set to give their all as the island nation unites for a moment of football history.
