RESIDENTS of communities along the newly commissioned MR14 and MR21 roads say the project has rekindled hopes of economic revival.

Most of them said they were expecting increased investment, trade and employment opportunities.

At Siphambanweni, Matsanjeni South MP Sabelo Ndlangamandla appealed to government to upgrade the nearby border post into a commercial port of entry. He said the newly-tarred road had laid the foundation for increased cross-border trade and economic development.

“This road creates an opportunity for development and job creation. We now hope the nearby border can be upgraded to a commercial entity,” he said.

At Maloma, Lubulini MP Dr Tambo Gina reflected on the area’s vibrant past, recalling a time when the town was a popular social and commercial hub.

“There was a filling station, a disco and people from all over the region came here to dance, mingle and socialise with the who’s who,” he said.

He expressed hope that the improved road infrastructure would help restore the area’s former economic vibrancy.

Residents during the event said they expected businesses, transport operators and investors to take advantage of the improved accessibility now offered by the new road network.

At Sithobelweni, some residents said they have been waiting for this project for years because promises of improving them were made over three decades ago.
