The delivery of essential medicines to remote communities across the country is to improve following a significant E250 000 investment by MTN into the Nkwe drone medical supply initiative operated in partnership with The Luke Commission.

The funding is expected to expand aerial medical logistics to more than 31 hard-to-reach clinics across the country, many of which continue to struggle with unreliable road infrastructure and delayed supply chains. The announcement was made by MTN Manager Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Thandwa Dlamini during the 21 Days of Yellow Care.

Dlamini said the investment reflected the company’s commitment to improving healthcare access in underserved communities.

She noted that the initiative directly responds to ongoing challenges faced by rural health facilities, where poor road conditions often delay the delivery of critical medicines and medical supplies. According to Dlamini, the funding will support more than 180 drone flights over the course of a year. These operations are expected to service clinics in remote areas where access remains a persistent challenge for health workers and patients alike.

She explained that the drone system offered a practical solution to bridge logistical gaps, ensuring that essential supplies such as vaccines, emergency medicines and laboratory samples reach their destinations more efficiently.

Dlamini further revealed that the project was developed following consultations with the Minister of Health, which highlighted transport and distribution bottlenecks as one of the major obstacles affecting healthcare delivery in rural areas.

The collaboration, she said, represents a shared effort between the private sector and government to strengthen health systems and improve service delivery outcomes. She added that the initiative forms part of MTN’s broader ‘21 Days of Yellow Care’ programme, which focuses on equitable healthcare for every community.

“Through this programme, MTN aims to address pressing social challenges by investing in solutions that have long-term benefits for communities, particularly in health,” she said. Dlamini noted that the Nkwe drone medical supply project is increasingly being viewed as a transformative model for healthcare logistics in the country.

By leveraging drone technology, the initiative reduces dependency on difficult terrain and long-distance road travel, significantly cutting delivery times and improving reliability. She noted that healthcare workers in participating clinics are expected to benefit from faster replenishment of stock, improved emergency response capacity and reduced interruptions in patient care.

The Luke Commission’s drone operator, Simiso Simelane, welcomed the support, emphasising that the integration of drone technology into its supply chain would enhance its ability to serve remote populations more consistently.

8BET INJECTS E50 000 INTO NKWE DRONE PROJECT

The Nkwe drone medical supply initiative has received a further boost after 8Bet committed E50 000 towards strengthening medical delivery services to remote communities across the country.

The contribution is expected to enhance the project’s capacity to transport essential medicines and health supplies to clinics that continue to face logistical challenges due to poor road infrastructure.

Speaking on the investment, 8Bet Head of Marketing Mqobi Tsabedze said the company was proud to support an initiative that would directly improve access to healthcare for underserved communities.

Tsabedze noted that the partnership with telecommunications giant MTN has added significant value to the project, as it brought together different sectors to address one of the country’s most pressing challenges — delays in medical supply distribution.

Tsabedze emphasised that the Nkwe drone project represented a practical and innovative solution to longstanding healthcare delivery barriers, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas.

He said the use of drone technology would ensure that critical medicines, vaccines and other medical essentials could reach clinics faster and more efficiently than traditional transport methods.

He further stated that 8Bet’s involvement reflected its broader commitment to corporate social responsibility and community development.

According to Tsabedze, businesses have a role to play in supporting national development priorities, especially in health where timely intervention could save lives.

“This is our way of giving back to the communities that continue to support and grow our business,” he said, adding that access to medical care was a fundamental need that should never be compromised due to logistical constraints.

MTN EMPLOYEES CLEAN UP MUSI CLINIC

MTN employees carried out a clean-up exercise at Musi Clinic in Mankayane, clearing overgrown vegetation and improving the overall condition of the facility as part of the company’s ‘21 Days of Yellow Care’ initiative.

MTN IT specialist Sentelweyinkhosi Nxumalo said the team visited the clinic to assist in creating a cleaner and more welcoming environment for both healthcare workers and patients.

Nxumalo said that the exercise was aimed at supporting the clinic beyond technology and medical supply interventions linked to the Nkwe drone project. She stated that being on the ground and engaging directly with communities made the initiative more meaningful for employees, as they were able to witness the positive impact of their efforts.

She added that seeing the smiles of beneficiaries reinforced MTN’s commitment to community upliftment and strengthened their dedication to continuing such outreach activities.
