As the Kingdom of Eswatini continues to position itself as a burgeoning hub for trade and tourism in Southern Africa, the national carrier, Eswatini Air, proudly celebrates its third anniversary.
Since its inaugural flight on March 26, 2023, the airline has transitioned from a bold national vision into a critical driver of the country’s socio-economic landscape, improving accessibility, stimulating economic activity and strengthening regional integration.
Under the theme ‘Everyone Must Fly’, the airline has spent the last 36 months dismantling barriers to air travel and making regional movement more accessible for citizens and travellers across the region.
This guiding philosophy reflects the airline’s commitment to affordability, convenience and inclusivity, ensuring that air travel is no longer viewed as a luxury but as an essential enabler of economic participation and social connection.
DRIVING ECONOMIC VALUE
One of the most significant milestones achieved during this three-year period is the airline’s contribution to the national economy. By introducing competitive pricing on routes that were previously underserved or dominated by limited options, Eswatini Air has helped reduce the cost of travel for both business and leisure passengers. These savings have translated into increased mobility for entrepreneurs, improved access to markets and greater opportunities for tourism growth.
In addition to consumer savings, the airline has directly contributed to job creation and local economic stimulation. As a result, more than 60 direct employment opportunities have been created across operations, customer service, ground handling coordination and administrative functions.
Beyond direct employment, Eswatini Air has supported a broader ecosystem of businesses, including travel agencies, hospitality providers, catering companies, logistics operators and airport service providers. These indirect benefits have multiplied the economic impact, reinforcing aviation as a catalyst for growth.
The airline’s operations have also enhanced inbound travel, encouraging visitors to explore the kingdom’s rich cultural heritage, wildlife experiences, and business opportunities. Improved air access has allowed tour operators to package Eswatini more competitively, while conference organisers and investors now find it easier to access the country.
OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE, RELIABILITY
Operating from King Mswati III International Airport, Eswatini Air has prioritised efficiency and reliability as cornerstones of its growth strategy. Despite the limited resources at its disposal, the airline has consistently maintained upwards of 95% schedule completion rate over the last three years and consistently achieves over 95 on-time performance (OTP) rates in an industry where 80% OTP is the benchmark.
These achievements demonstrate the airline’s operational discipline and commitment to customer satisfaction. These performances are highly impressive and noteworthy for a young airline navigating the complexities of a highly regulated and competitive aviation environment.
The airline’s initial network connecting Eswatini to Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, and Harare has matured steadily, with consistent passenger growth and improved load factors, which have been consistently growing by over 25% year-on-year. These routes have enhanced connectivity for business travellers, students, government delegations and tourists, while also reducing reliance on indirect travel options.
The airline’s operational strategy has focused on measured growth—ensuring that each route is commercially viable and strategically aligned with national development priorities. This disciplined approach has allowed Eswatini Air to build a stable foundation while gradually expanding its footprint across the region.
PREPARING FOR GLOBAL STANDARDS
Another key milestone in the airline’s journey is its preparation for the International Air Transport Association Operational Safety Audit (IOSA), scheduled for mid-April 2026. IOSA certification represents a globally recognised benchmark for operational safety and efficiency. Achieving this milestone allows Eswatini Air to fast-track interline and codeshare arrangements with international airlines, significantly improving long-haul transit passengers’ experiences.
Successful certification will also enhance investor confidence, strengthen the airline’s reputation and integrate Eswatini more fully into the global aviation network. This step underscores the airline’s commitment to adhering to international standards and further cements its focus on delivering safe, reliable air transport services.
EXPANDING REGIONAL CONNECTIVITY
As part of its continued growth, Eswatini Air is preparing to launch operations to Lusaka, marking another important milestone in regional connectivity. The Lusaka route will strengthen trade ties, facilitate diplomatic engagement and open new tourism corridors between Eswatini and Zambia. It also reinforces the airline’s role in promoting intra-African connectivity, aligning with broader continental goals of enhancing regional integration.
The addition of Lusaka reflects a deliberate strategy to connect Eswatini to key economic hubs within Southern Africa. By linking business centres and tourism destinations, the airline supports cross-border commerce and encourages collaboration among regional markets.
SUPPORTING SMES, TRADE
Beyond passenger travel, Eswatini Air will soon begin leveraging belly cargo capacity to support local exporters. Small and medium-sized enterprises will soon be able to transport time-sensitive goods more efficiently, opening access to regional markets.
This development is particularly beneficial for sectors such as agriculture, crafts, textiles, and light manufacturing. Improved air freight options will reduce transit times, enhance product freshness for perishable goods, and increase reliability for business shipments. As cargo demand grows, the airline aims to further strengthen this segment to complement passenger operations.
INVESTING IN PEOPLE, SKILLS
The airline has also contributed to capacity building within the country’s aviation sector. Through training initiatives and exposure to international operational standards, Eswatini Air is nurturing local talent in areas such as customer service, operations coordination, and aviation management besides scarce technical skills such as pilots and engineers.
This investment in skills development ensures that the airline’s growth contributes to long-term industry sustainability within the country.
CUSTOMER-CENTRIC APPROACH
A defining feature of Eswatini Air’s journey has been its focus on delivering a seamless and innovative customer experience. Besides the free airport shuttle service, valued customers benefit from shorter queues, efficient boarding processes, and personalised service reflective of Eswatini’s renowned hospitality.
This customer-centric approach has helped build loyalty and position the airline as a preferred regional travel option.
LOOKING AHEAD
As Eswatini Air celebrates three years of operations, the focus remains on sustainable growth, operational excellence, and enhanced connectivity. The airline aims to strengthen existing routes, explore strategic partnerships, and expand into additional regional markets where demand supports viability.
The third anniversary marks not just a celebration of achievements, but also a reaffirmation of the airline’s vision to connect Eswatini to the region and beyond.
By fostering trade, tourism, and investment, Eswatini Air continues to play a vital role in the country’s development agenda. As the Bateleur Eagle (Ingculungculu) continues to grace the African skies, the message to the nation remains clear: the sky is no longer the limit, but a gateway to a more connected, competitive and prosperous Eswatini. Everyone must Fly! Eswatini Air.
