The suspect believed to have brutally killed a retired senior police officer has been arrested and officially charged with murder.


The man aged 43 of KaGodloza at KoNtshingila was arrested in connection with the murder of retired senior police officer Celani Motsa (62) who was holding the rank of inspector while based at Hlatikulu Police Station.

The suspect is expected to make his first court appearance at the Nhlangano Magistrate’s Court, acting Deputy Chief Police Information and Communications Office Inspector Mazwi Ndzimandze confirmed the development.

Ndzimandze said the suspect was arrested at his parental homestead.

Inspector Ndzimandze further stated that police investigations were ongoing and mentioned that a woman was also being probed if she did not play part in the murder.

Motsa was killed on Tuesday inside a house he was renting for the woman he considered his wife, having married her through Swazi law and custom (kuteka). The woman whose identity is known to this publication is employed as a cleaner at Hlatikulu Police Station. It is understood that the man who attacked and killed Motsa had also married the same woman through the Swazi law and custom.

Before marrying the woman, Motsa had a wife but the marriage experienced problems which led to him and the mother of his children separating but it could not be ascertained if they had officially divorced when he decided to marry another wife.

Motsa served in the security detail of former national commissioner of police Isaac Magagula from 2009 to 2018. After Magagula’s redeployment to Parliament in 2018, Motsa went to work at Hlatikulu Police Station where he retired.
