Thirty artists have applied to use The Foyer at the Eswatini Theatre Club, which was opened on October 21 to provide free space for creatives to develop and showcase their work in 2026.

The initiative, which targets local artists and neighbouring countries, was revealed by the club’s Vice Chairperson, Sizo Hlophe. He confirmed that applications were currently being evaluated, noting that the level of interest reflected a growing demand for sustainable creative spaces that allow artists to produce work without financial strain.

Hlophe said they encourage programmes that are continuous rather than once-off events, arguing that projects with long-term plans stand a better chance of development and impact. He explained that recurring events, such as a monthly poetry show, had greater potential to grow and build consistent audiences compared to short-lived activities, which present higher risks and limited outcomes.

He revealed that nearly 30 applications have already been submitted, including proposals from local creatives as well as applicants from Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and South Africa. He added that the Theatre Club is assessing whether applicants qualify to use the new space, with responses expected in January.

According to Hlophe, the selected artists will be notified in February 2026, when programmes officially begin. He said they are pleased with the level of interest, as it showed that creatives were taking advantage of the opportunity and were committed to investing in their work.

The Foyer is a newly renovated section of the theatre that offers open access to artists without booking fees, allowing them to work, experiment, rehearse, or showcase new projects. All fees and equipment costs have been waived for 2026 to support artistic experimentation and innovation.

Artists can book the space through the office or apply by visiting the Theatre Club’s official Instagram page, where the application link remains open until December 15. Hlophe said the space was created to make artists feel welcomed and supported in their creative journeys while revitalising the local cultural scene. He noted that the renovation forms part of a broader redevelopment plan that includes upgrading the auditorium, candlelight room, bar, and exterior area.
