GOLF – Manzini Golf Club captain Wakie Lawrence stamped his authority on the Lowveld after producing a composed and clinical performance to win the fourth edition of the Luphohlo Commodities Monthly Mug at Mananga Golf Club over the weekend.

Lawrence outplayed a competitive field of 40 golfers to claim top carding an impressive 64 points in a tightly contested tournament held at Mananga Golf Club.

Finishing in second place was Lwati Dvuba, who returned a respectable 68 points after a disciplined round. Lenny Mkhonta claimed third position with 69 points, remaining within touching distance of the leaders throughout the competition.

The battle for the remaining top-five positions went down to the wire, with Bhekumusa Mtsetfwa edging Moses Sifundza on countback after both golfers finished on 70 points. Mtsetfwa’s stronger finish earned him fourth place, while Sifundza settled for fifth.

The experienced golfer admitted that lifting the Monthly Mug was a major confidence booster despite the pressure of competing on a course that will again test his game in the coming days.

“I am delighted to have won this tournament. It is always satisfying to see your hard work paying off, especially against such a strong field of golfers. There was pressure because I am preparing for the Nomads Tournament on the same course, but this victory gives me confidence going into next weekend,” said Lawrence.

The Luphohlo Commodities Monthly Mug, which was launched in April, has quickly established itself as one of the country’s most anticipated monthly golf events. The competition continues to attract golfers from different clubs while creating an environment where sport and business networking go hand in hand.

Luphohlo Commodities Managing Director Nathi Van Zuydam expressed his satisfaction with the rapid growth of the tournament, saying every edition has exceeded expectations.

“We are very happy with the turnout and the quality standard of golf that we continue to witness. Every edition has shown encouraging growth, and it is pleasing to see so many golfers embracing this initiative,” said Van Zuydam.

Van Zuydam also reaffirmed the company’s commitment to the competition, with plans already being considered to expand the tournament as participation continues to grow.

Best Gross honours went to Moses Sifundza after returning an impressive score of 76, highlighting his consistency throughout the round despite narrowly missing out on the overall title.
