SOCCER – Amawele boss Chief Ally Kgomongwe has parted ways with coaches Mpumelelo ‘Mapoo’ Ngwenya and Christian Thwala just one match into the 2026/27 MTN Premier League season.
The decision follows Amawele’s 0-3 defeat to Ezulwini United at the Ka-Langa Technical Centre on Sunday.
Ngwenya and Thwala took charge of the team during the pre-season after Kgomongwe (the Pretoria-based businessman) acquired the status of Amawele FC for an undisclosed amount.
Kgomongwe confirmed that both coaches had been relieved of their duties with immediate effect, expressing his disappointment with the team’s performance in the season opener.
“What happened at Ka-Langa on Sunday is totally unacceptable. I am really disappointed because the material is there and most of the experienced players were left on the bench,” Kgomongwe said.
“I gave the coaches a chance to lead the team and they have failed me. Now the marriage is over. I am looking to assemble a good technical bench. Remember, I have an eye. I introduced Selaotse ‘Sly’ Mosala (Moneni Pirates coach) to Eswatini football and now everyone is after him,” he said.
The decision was later confirmed in a statement issued by Amawele Technical Director Frans Mpedi, who said the club had acted in what it considered to be the best interests of the team and its long-term objectives.
“This was not an easy decision. The technical team has been part of an important period in the club’s journey and we acknowledge the commitment, sacrifices and professionalism they demonstrated in serving Amawele,” Mpedi said.
“On behalf of the club, I would like to place our sincere gratitude to the head coach and every member of his technical team. We appreciate the work they did with the players, their contribution to the development of the team and the moments they shared with the club and supporters.”
Mpedi said the club’s decision was driven by the demands of competitive football and the need to reassess its direction.
“Football, however, is a results-driven industry and as a club we have a responsibility to continuously assess our direction and make difficult decisions when circumstances require them.
“This decision is about the future of Amawele FC and ensuring that the club remains focused on its objectives. We part ways with respect and appreciation. There will be no bitterness and no disrespect.”
He added that the club remained committed to building a competitive and disciplined side as it entered a new phase.
“We recognise their contribution and wish every member of the technical team success in the next chapter of their careers.
“As Amawele enters this new phase, we remain fully committed to building a competitive, disciplined and united football club. The transition will be managed carefully, with the interests of the players, supporters and the club at the centre of the decision.”
Amawele now face another stern test in their next assignment when they take on Mbabane Highlanders AMFC.
None of the two coaches could be reached for comment when contacted yesterday.
Meanwhile, Eswatini Coaches Association Secretary General James Kunene condemned the swift action taken against the two coaches.
“If it is really true, it is shocking that they were relieved of their duties after just one match. We have also contacted our affected members about this and they said they are waiting for something official from the Amawele managing director,” Kunene said.
“As an association, we also appeal to club bosses to exercise patience with our members.”
…Nothing wrong with using Black Eagles emblem – Ally
SOCCER – Amawele boss Chief Ally Kgomongwe says he sees nothing wrong with his club using the Mbabane Eagles emblem on its playing kit.
The Amawele kit, which featured the unapproved emblem, was used in the club’s MTN Premier League opener against Ezulwini United, sparking debate among football supporters.
Kgomongwe, however, remains unfazed by the controversy, arguing that there is a precedent for clubs modifying their identities.
“I see nothing wrong with using the Eagles emblem. Mbabane Highlanders added ‘AM’ last season, so I do not think they can crucify me for that,” he said.
Premier League of Eswatini Chief Executive Officer Pat Vilakati said he could only comment on matters involving approved member clubs.
The controversy is not without precedent in local football.
Denver Sundowns previously sparked a similar uproar when they took to the field wearing a kit resembling that of South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns during the 2022 Momo Cup play-offs at the Mavuso Sports Centre.
The kit featured the CAF Champions League gold star and carried the logos of Mamelodi Sundowns’ sponsors, including Puma, Ubuntu Botho and Hyundai.
