His Majesty King Mswati III has told soldiers that serving in the army was not merely an occupation, but a sacred vow to serve the nation at any cost.
Addressing the nation during the 53rd Army Day, His Majesty paid tribute to the men and women of the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force, describing their role as central to the country’s peace, stability and sovereignty.
“This is not merely a job; it is a sacred vow to serve the nation at any cost,” he said. During the momentous occasion, which also served as a precursor to His Majesty’s birthday celebrations and his 40-year celebration on the throne with excellent exhibitions by the army, the king described Army Day as a significant occasion dedicated to honouring the courage, sacrifice and unwavering commitment of soldiers who continue to safeguard the country.
He said the army remains the nation’s first and last line of defence, consistently protecting the country’s borders and citizens under demanding and often harsh conditions.
Highlighting the realities of military service, he said soldiers operate in environments that range from extreme weather conditions to unpredictable security threats.
Despite these challenges, the king said, they continue to demonstrate a firm commitment to ensuring that the nation remains safe at all times. Their work reflects a singular focus on preserving peace and protecting national stability.
The king further commended the high level of discipline and preparedness demonstrated during the day’s military drills and displays.
“The performances were a reflection of physical strength, tactical readiness and selflessness, which remain essential attributes in fulfilling the defence force’s mandate,” he said.
Referring to the theme of the day, ‘The Safety of the Nation is Our Priority’, the king said it speaks directly to the responsibility entrusted to the defence force and emphasised that serving the nation requires diligence, discipline and a consistent commitment to maintaining peace.
He noted that the nature of threats facing the country has evolved, requiring soldiers to adapt beyond traditional defence roles and that modern security challenges were no longer limited to physical aggression, but included broader issues such as instability, lawlessness and national division, all of which pose risks to the country’s peace and unity.
His Majesty further stated that soldiers had a responsibility to ensure that no threats disrupted the lives of citizens, including safeguarding communities across the country and ensuring that peace was maintained in both urban and rural areas, as well as protecting the future of children, particularly within school environments.
He further highlighted the importance of continuous training, noting that as global dynamics shift, soldiers must remain prepared to respond effectively to emerging challenges.
He also underscored that the ongoing development of skills was essential to ensure that the defence force remained capable and responsive in an ever-changing environment.
While acknowledging the growing influence of technology in modern warfare, the king said it could not replace the role of the individual soldier. He stressed that the physical presence of disciplined personnel on the ground remained a vital component in maintaining peace and ensuring national security.
The king also touched on the importance of maintaining strong internal values within the army, including discipline, loyalty and selfless service, noting that these principles were essential in ensuring that soldiers remain committed to their duty of serving the nation and its people.
He further recognised the contribution of the army in supporting national wellbeing through health-related initiatives.
He noted that through various clinics established across the country, the military continues to extend healthcare services not only to its members, but also to the broader population.
In addition, the king highlighted the importance of cooperation within the broader security sector, noting that collaboration between the army and other agencies was essential in addressing crime and corruption.
He said these challenges require a coordinated approach to ensure that peace and stability are maintained, which are necessary conditions for national development and economic growth.
He assured the army that the nation stands firmly behind them and appreciates their continued dedication, even in circumstances where resources may be limited.
He acknowledged their readiness to respond to all situations, regardless of the level of difficulty or danger involved.
“In the life of a soldier, when a task is assigned, there is no room for failure. Yours is to ensure ‘mission accomplished’ at all times,” he said.
The king urged soldiers to remain vigilant and steadfast in their duty, while upholding the legacy of those who served before them. He emphasised the importance of maintaining the same level of dedication and faithfulness demonstrated by previous generations, ensuring that the responsibility of protecting the nation continues to be carried forward with honour and commitment.
