Somhlolo National Stadium came alive with rehearsals yesterday as preparations intensified for His Majesty King Mswati III’s Ruby Jubilee and 58th birthday celebrations set for April 24.

As the country prepares to mark the Ruby Jubilee of His Majesty, celebrating four decades since his coronation on April 25, 1986, alongside his 58th birthday, rehearsals are already in full swing.

Rehearsals at Somhlolo National Stadium have started drawing crowds, with performers from across the country gathering to prepare for the historic occasion.

The atmosphere at the stadium came alive as groups rehearsed cultural dances, music and poetry, giving the public a glimpse of what to expect on the main day. From chanting and singing to traditional displays, performers showed determination despite the hot weather conditions.

Ministry of Home Affairs Communications Officer Mlandvo Dlamini revealed that preparations are progressing well, with participants taking the opportunity seriously.

“What will happen at this year’s celebration is something the country has never seen before because a lot of practices have been infused into the programme,” he said.

The entertainment line-up is expected to feature Ummiso, Sibhaca, Lutsango, board displays, drama, bands, local and international music, choirs and poetry.

Dlamini noted that several activities being introduced this year will be happening for the first time during the national celebration.

“We are happy to see schools participating throughout this event, especially the Swazi National High School pupils who will be performing poetry,” Dlamini said.

He stated that by the look of the rehearsals so far, the main celebration is expected to deliver a colourful mix of culture, entertainment and patriotism as the country honours the king’s milestone in grand style.

The rehearsals attracted a large number of groups from across the country, with members of the public also coming to watch as preparations intensified.

Their performances reflected confidence and discipline, while conductors could be seen encouraging choristers to give even more energy and commitment.
