Members of Parliament have called on the Prime Minister Rusell Mmiso Dlamini to clarify on the number of locals to be recruited into the Royal Eswatini Police Service CREPSD following an overwhelming response of more than 17 000 applications.
The concerns were raised during a debate on the prime minister’s office second-quarter performance report in Parliament on Friday, where the PM was represented by Deputy Prime Minister Thuli Dladla.
The MPs raised questions about the number of people who would eventually be taken into the police service, saying they hoped the premier would provide answers on the recruitment process.
Ngudzeni MP Charles Ndlovu was among those who questioned how many applicants would be recruited and whether government could consider taking as many as half of those who had applied.
The MPs’ concerns come after more than 17 000 young people submitted applications during the first phase of this year’s police recruitment exercise, reflecting the high demand for employment opportunities.
Ndlovu also raised the need to make greater use of technology when applications are submitted, suggesting that this could help improve the process.
The MPs said they were looking forward to receiving responses from the prime minister on the number of recruits expected to be taken in and government’s plans for the applicants who would not be successful.
